Things I have learned about these easily likeable on trend tools:

  • They are easier to use in creativity projects.

  • Less messier, faster to clean up and require no preparation.

  • Do require some shaking of the paint periodically if using them for more than a few minutes at a time.

  • Excellent for detailing, not so much for blocking in of large bodies of paint.

  • On an open canvas, inconsistencies can show up if mounted on a easel in display.

  • On canvas board, colour isn't transparent and so 'character flaws' are significantly reduced.

  • Unlike traditional brush and paint application, it may require a second layering of the paint to intensify the colour upon canvas,

  • But in the other hand, it means that the layering of intensity of the same colour is possible so as to create a same colour gradient effect, giving the creative opportunity to utilise dimensional impact without needing to highlight with a neutral accent colour.

  • Paint pens are better suited to paper applications, and so ideal for fast satisfaction projects such as journaling, workshop, rapid-fire work (market artists), and other similar creations

  • For studio or gallery applications, traditional paint and brush would be better for time spent on quality sellable work

What I liked about this particular project experience was that it gave a high satisfaction feedback to me during a time where I needed a fast mindfulness activity, and it resonated to similar activity as that which Conscious Colouring-In achieved with the Faber Castel Connector Pens challenge in 2024.

Normally I would do an experimentation like this in a journal, however I was wanting to add colour to my studio office and so now this will be able to sit comfortably on a shelf as a reminder tool of when I'm needing to make a decision on which method and tool I would be using for which outcome purpose I had in mind for that moment in time.

It will be the inspiration dabbling piece for a separate brush version to include in the Penola Arts Festival 2026 when the collection goes on display in the studio.

Overall an fun and exciting experience to have, I have had wanted to try them out for quite some time but was hesitant until now.

A tool that would be especially good for children to be able to access the paint experience but where space and storage options of traditional supplies would be a challenge.
